Congratulations! The Giga-ROM Archives version 2.0 is the largest collection of Macintosh software ever assembled on a CD-ROM.
There are 13,277 archives on this disc representing over 1.7 gigabytes (1,700 megabytes) of Macintosh shareware, freeware and public domain files.
Using Compact Pro
Most of the files are archived in Bill Goodman’s Compact Pro format. The Compact Pro archiving program is included on the disc in a folder on the root level of the CD-ROM.
Take the time to print out the release notes and the user guide, then consider registering your copy of the Compact Pro program. A handy order form is included for your convenience.
To de-archive a file, follow these simple instructions:
1. Install the Compact Pro program on your hard drive.
2. Copy the archived file(s) you wish to open to your hard drive.
3. Double click the archive you wish to open. The Compact Pro
program will launch automatically, or in some cases, the file
will de-archive itself without launching the program.
4. If the file launches Compact Pro, a screen will come up giving you
a chance to register your copy of Compact Pro (if you have not
already done so). Choose register to enter your name and
registration number. Otherwise, choose the button labeled Not
Yet. Your archive will appear in a new window showing the
file(s) available to de-archive. Click on (choose) the file(s) you
wish to remove from the archive. “Command E” will extract
the chosen files and allow you to place them somewhere on
your hard disk.
5. To open another archive, choose “Command O” (not zero) or look
under the file menu for “Open” with your mouse.
Compact Pro is one of the best shareware programs on the market today. We recommend, as the author suggests, that you register your copy after the first 30 days of use. Bill Goodman deserves your support for this excellent program. Your $25 payment will earn you registered user status and will allow Bill to advise you of regular updates.
Using the Giga-ROM Archives on a BBS
The very nature of this disc as a 1,700 megabyte archival collection lends itself to the creation of a state-of-the-art bulletin board file section. Indeed, the largest Macintosh bulletin board systems in the world are using this disc as their main file section.

Using The On Location Indexes
We use On Technologies’ On Location desk accessory to index the filenames and text of every file in the Giga-ROM Archives. We believe On Location is one of the best utilities available for this purpose. This index allows for the speedy search of any and every file on the disc when used with the On Location program. For your convenience, a copy of the On Location demo is included in the demo section on the disc.
For fastest results, copy the On Location index from the On Location folder on Giga-ROM to a folder named “On Location Indexes” in your system folder. On Location can read the index for the Giga-ROM from your hard drive much faster, if you have the room available on your hard drive.
